The page exists, the properties are on their way. In the meantime, here are other options for your stay — and if you own a property in the area, now's the time to list it.
Saly is Senegal's only true beach resort. Elsewhere on the coast you will find hotels, sometimes excellent ones, but set in villages that live off something else. Here, the whole place was designed to welcome visitors: a beach protected by coastal structures, a cluster of hotels over a few kilometers, restaurants, activities, and teams for whom hospitality is the job.
That changes what you are buying. A hotel in Saly is not a bed with breakfast: it is a complete product, where the pool, the equipped beach, the entertainment, sometimes the kids' club and the team that organizes outings are all part of the price. That is why, fifty years after it was created, the resort is still the gateway to the country for a first visit.
The only real trade-off: the size of the hotel
Once you have chosen Saly, the question that shapes your stay is neither the area nor the category: it is the number of rooms. Both models exist a few hundred meters apart and produce completely different weeks.
The large complex — a hundred rooms or more — offers what no small property can: several restaurants, a real kids' club, daytime and evening entertainment, sports facilities, a good-sized pool, a front desk open around the clock. You are self-sufficient, you pick your program from the morning board, and you can spend a week without ever going out the gate. The downside is anonymity: nobody knows your first name, and quality depends on organization rather than people.
The small hotel — fifteen to thirty rooms, often run by the owners — turns all of that around. No entertainment, one restaurant, a more modest pool. In return, you are recognized from the second day, schedules are adapted to you, you are pointed to the resort's best addresses, and value for money is generally better. It is the choice of regulars and returning guests.
There is no right answer in absolute terms. With young children and a week to fill, the complex delivers. As a couple, with friends, or on a third trip to Senegal, the small hotel is almost always more satisfying.
What Saly's hotels cover
Beach complex with entertainment — several restaurants, pools, kids' club, organized activities, direct beach access. The "we take care of everything" format.
Mid-sized hotel with pool — thirty to sixty rooms, one restaurant, a pool, a team that organizes outings. The best balance between services and personal welcome.
Small boutique hotel — around fifteen rooms, a garden, good food, owners on site. The best value for money in the resort.
Aparthotel with kitchenette — a room or studio equipped for breakfast and simple meals, while keeping the property's services. Useful for families.
Two points to pin down whatever the format: exactly what the chosen meal plan covers, and the real distance to the beach and what the path there is like — ten minutes through sand twice a day is not the same as two minutes on a paved path.
Where each type of hotel is
Saly is about 80 kilometers from Dakar. Within the resort, geography matches hotel size fairly closely — which makes searching easier once you have made your choice.
The large complexes take up most of the seafront in the historic core, where plots were big enough when the resort was built. It is also the area where you can get around on foot, restaurants and shops included.
The mid-sized hotels are spread along the whole coastline, including the second row, a few dozen or a few hundred meters from the sand. This is where the balance between services and rates is most favorable.
The small hotels and houses are mostly set back and toward the north, on larger, leafier plots. It is genuinely quiet; a vehicle or taxis become useful in the evening.
A note on the beach, valid everywhere: it is divided by groynes and breakwaters that hold the sand, so its width varies noticeably from one stretch to the next. Ask what is in front of the hotel at high tide, and how you get down to it.
How the season changes the experience
In Saly, the season does not only change the weather: it changes the product itself. This is a resort peculiarity and worth keeping in mind, because it determines what you will find open.
In peak season, everything runs: the kids' clubs operate, there is entertainment every day, several restaurants are open in each large hotel, all the activity providers are on site, and the resort is lively in the evening. This is when a complex is at its best — and exactly why you choose one.
In the off-season, the picture changes: some of the entertainment stops, some restaurants close, seasonal staff leave, and a few hotels cut back their services or close for a few weeks. A large complex running at half power loses most of its appeal, whereas a small hotel run by its owners works exactly the same way all year round. It is a decisive argument, and nobody mentions it.
In other words: if your dates fall out of season, the balance tips clearly toward small properties. When you book, check explicitly what will actually be running on your dates — restaurant, pool, entertainment, kids' club — rather than what appears on the property's page.
Good to know & booking
From the international airport at Diass, the trip is shorter than from Dakar: airport transfers can be booked in advance and spare you negotiating on arrival, especially at night.
The area offers the widest range of activities in the country: jet skiing and boat trips from the beach, quad biking inland, and the Bandia reserve forty minutes away. Book in advance rather than on the spot.
If budget is your main constraint, the cheap hotels in Saly page explains the two real levers — the date and the meal plan. From six people upward, compare with the villas for rent in Saly, whose price per person quickly becomes more attractive. And for a quieter stay five minutes from the resort, see the guesthouses in Ngaparou.
You book by paying 20% of the total online, which secures the room; the balance is paid to the property on arrival, usually in cash. For a stay planned several months ahead, as is often the case here, this saves you tying up the whole amount while you wait. An additional deposit may be requested in high season; it is stated on the listing and follows the same policy. Tourist tax paid on site.
Cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival in low season (June 1 – October 31) and 14 days in high season (November 1 – May 31) — which covers exactly the school vacation and holiday periods. After that, the booking is final and the 20% is non-refundable. A booking canceled within 24 hours of confirmation is refunded in full if arrival is more than seven days away. Last-minute bookings are final once confirmed, with one change of dates allowed up to 48 hours before. If the property cancels, we offer you an equivalent option on the Petite Côte, or refund all fees in full. The resident rate is shown on each listing for residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, on an account verified after a phone call.
Who is it for?
First-time visitors to Senegal: this is the easiest place to find a complete, well-organized package, with teams used to welcoming guests.
Families with young children, for whom a kids' club, a pool and a protected beach matter more than an insider address.
Car-free stays, provided you stay in Saly Portudal: the resort can then be enjoyed entirely on foot.
And residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, for whom the resident rate and seasonality set by European vacations open up excellent windows outside high season.
Frequently asked questions
Large complex or small hotel in Saly?
The complex offers several restaurants, a real kids' club, entertainment and a 24-hour front desk: you can spend a week there without going out the gate, at the cost of anonymity. The small hotel offers the opposite — you are recognized, they adapt to you, value for money is better, but there is no entertainment.
What is included in the price?
It depends entirely on the meal plan you choose, and that is the first point to pin down. A hotel in Saly sells a complete product — pool, equipped beach, often entertainment and activities — but exactly which meals are covered varies widely from one hotel and one plan to another.
Is the beach the same everywhere?
No. The coastline is divided by groynes and breakwaters that hold the sand: between two structures the beach is wide, elsewhere it narrows. Ask what is in front of the hotel at high tide, as well as the real distance and what the path there is like.
What happens in a large complex out of season?
Some of the entertainment stops, some restaurants close and seasonal staff leave. A large hotel running at half power loses most of what you chose it for, whereas a small hotel run by its owners works the same way all year round. Out of season, the balance tips toward small properties.
What should I check before confirming a booking?
Three things: what will actually be running on your dates — restaurant, pool, entertainment, kids' club — rather than what appears on the listing; exactly what the chosen meal plan covers; and how wide the beach is in front of the hotel at high tide, with the path down to it.
Hotel or villa?
Up to four or five people, a hotel remains simple and competitive, service included. Beyond six, a villa works out cheaper per person, provided you are willing to handle meals, shopping and day-to-day organization.
How does payment work?
You pay 20% online to secure the room, then the balance to the property on arrival, usually in cash. For a stay booked several months ahead, this saves you tying up the whole amount while you wait. Finally, budget for the tourist tax, 1,000 FCFA per person per night. It is paid directly to the property, which collects it — we do not — and the amount is given as a guide.
