Guesthouses in other areas

In Ngor, the pool question works differently from anywhere else in Dakar. Here you have the bay — the only calm water on the peninsula, sheltered from the swell, where you can really swim. So why pay for a pool?

For three very practical reasons that anyone who has stayed in the village knows: weekends, when the bay fills up with Dakar residents; low tide, when the rocky areas are exposed; and young children, for whom even calm water is still the sea. This page lists the guesthouses in Ngor that have a pool.

We are a Senegalese company, and we put you in direct contact with the properties. The resident rate is shown on every property.

What a pool is worth in a village with no room to spare

Let's start with what this filter really tells you, which is far from trivial: in Ngor, a pool is first and foremost a sign of space. The village is one of the densest parts of the peninsula, a maze of sandy lanes where houses stand wall to wall and space is gained by building up rather than out. That's exactly why the rooftop terrace is the area's architectural signature. In this context, having a pool means the house has a rare footprint — a courtyard, a garden, some distance from the lane. So you're not just filtering for an amenity: you're filtering for the most generous plots in the area.

Then there's how it's actually used, which isn't the same as a pool in Palmarin or central Dakar. Here, the pool doesn't replace the sea, it complements it. It comes into its own on Saturdays and Sundays, when the bay's beach fills with Dakar families there for the day — a great sign for the village, much less handy when you want a quiet swim. It's useful at low tide, when the rocky seabed is exposed in places. It's for rinsing off the salt at the end of the day, which seems trivial until you've spent a week swimming every day. And it's for children who aren't yet at ease in the waves, even small ones.

Finally, there's a difference in atmosphere that matters over a stay of several nights. The village wakes early and lives loudly: mosques, radios, pirogues, children. That's what gives Ngor its charm, and nobody stays here hoping for silence. But a house with a courtyard and pool gives you an inside, a place of your own to unwind between outings. It's the natural complement to such a lively neighborhood.

What "with pool" covers here

  • Pool in a courtyard or patio — the dominant format: modest in size, shielded from the lane, often the house's only outdoor space.
  • Terrace or rooftop pool — the most sought-after version in Ngor, with views over the bay and the island, and the sunset as a bonus.
  • Small plunge pool — a few meters long, designed for rinsing off and cooling down after the beach rather than swimming.
  • Shared pool — it's a guesthouse: the pool is shared by all the rooms, and it's where the end of the day is spent.

Three useful checks: the size and depth, often modest in such a dense village; whether there's shade, rarer on a rooftop terrace than in a garden; and the distance to the beach, because the real luxury here is having both within three minutes.

Where you'll be

Ngor sits on the northern tip of the peninsula, with its sheltered bay, its Lebu village and the island four hundred meters offshore, a few minutes away by motorized pirogue. The main page for guesthouses in Ngor covers the village, its surf heritage and neighborhood life.

As far as the water goes, remember this: the bay is calm and swimmable year-round, surfing is a few minutes away for all levels, snorkeling is done around the island, and several spots on the bay offer beach days with sun loungers. The house's pool adds to all this; it doesn't replace it.

When the pool is most useful

Weekends, all year round: that's when the bay fills up and you appreciate having an alternative five meters from your room. It's the first criterion, even before the season.

Next, from November to March, the sea is cooler — it's surfers' season, not swimmers' — and the pool, often warmer, takes over for children and anyone who feels the cold. From April to June, the sea warms up and becomes the best option: the pool is then mainly for rinsing off and the hot hours. From July to September, the humidity of the rainy season (hivernage) makes both welcome, and it's the easiest time to find a room.

Good to know & booking

One thing specific to Ngor to know before booking: the village lanes are narrow and sandy, and many houses can't be reached by car right to the door. Pack luggage you can carry about a hundred meters and agree on a drop-off point with your hosts. The international airport is east of the city: allow a good hour.

Twenty percent of the total paid online secures the room; the balance is paid at the house on the day you arrive. Use the direct contact with your hosts, available as soon as you book, to check two things specific to this page: the pool's opening hours, and the actual distance to the beach.

You can cancel free of charge up to 7 days before arrival in low season (June–October) and 14 days in high season (November–May); after that, the booking is final, with one change of date allowed up to 48 hours before on late bookings. If the house has to cancel, we offer an equivalent option or refund all fees in full. The resident rate is shown on every property for residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, on an account verified after a phone call. The tourist tax is added to the rate: allow 1,000 FCFA per person per night, paid on site to the owner. Senegal Rent does not collect it; this information is provided for your budget.

Who is it for?

Families with young children, first and foremost: however calm, the bay is still the sea, and a pool lets little ones play in the water without constant supervision. Stays that include a weekend, when the beach gets very busy and an immediate fallback is welcome. Long stays and remote work, where getting back in the water at 6 p.m. without crossing the village becomes part of the routine. Couples who want a terrace overlooking the bay and a way to cool off without going down to the beach. And travelers who value calm, for whom an enclosed courtyard in such a lively village is worth a lot.

If you're coming to surf and swim every day, the bay is more than enough, and Ngor guesthouses without a pool are often better placed for the beach — it's an honest trade-off to make.

The best moment comes late on a Sunday afternoon. The beach is packed, music drifts over from the beach shacks, the pirogues make their last runs to the island. You walk back up three lanes, push open a door, and you're in a silent courtyard with clear water. The village carries on just behind the wall, and that's just fine.

FAQ

Why a pool when there's the bay?

Because the bay fills with Dakar families on weekends, the rocky seabed is exposed at low tide in places, and even calm water is still the sea for young children. The pool complements swimming in the bay; it doesn't replace it.

Are the pools big?

Rarely: the village is very dense and ground space is scarce. These are courtyard or terrace pools, made for cooling off and rinsing rather than swimming laps.

Is a house with a pool better located?

Not necessarily, and it's a real trade-off: a pool means a larger plot, often set a little back from the seafront. If you want the beach thirty seconds away, check the actual distance on the property page.

Is the pool private?

No, it's shared among the guesthouse's rooms. Check the opening hours with your hosts, as they vary from one house to another.

Is it suitable for young children?

They're exactly the guests for whom this filter is most valuable. Still, check the depth and whether there's a shallow area, as these aren't a given.

Can I reach the house by car?

Not always right to the door: the village lanes are narrow and sandy. Pack luggage you can carry about a hundred meters and agree on a drop-off point with your hosts.

How does payment work?

Twenty percent online secures the room, and the balance is paid at the house on the day you arrive. Use the direct contact with your hosts to confirm the pool hours and the car drop-off point.
