Looking for accommodation in Dakar is usually a gamble on the condition of the building. A 1975 building and a 2018 building look alike in photos and have nothing in common once you live there: elevator or not, generator or not, water pressure on the upper floors, insulation, parking. You only find out when you arrive.
Keur Gorgui is the only neighborhood in the city where this question does not arise. The development was built in one go, on land laid out in the 2010s, and the vast majority of its buildings are the same age — and therefore have the same standard features. What this changes for a stay of several weeks: you no longer choose based on the state of the building; you choose based on the floor, the view and the level of service.
A neighborhood without the gamble
The practical consequence is simple. In a Keur Gorgui building, the elevator, underground parking, generator, water tank and security guards are part of the construction, not a service added after the fact. These are features you cannot install in an old building, and they are exactly what costs a lot elsewhere in the city.
On a three-month assignment, this takes off the table the three questions that most often spoil a move to Dakar: what happens during a power cut, what happens when the water pressure drops, and where do you park the car. Here, the answer is standard.
That leaves the real selection criteria, and they are more interesting. The floor, which determines noise and ventilation — the buildings are tall and the difference between a third floor and a ninth is clear. The view, which genuinely exists from the upper floors, something rare in Dakar away from the seafront. And the residence's level of service: cleaning, laundry, reception, gym, pool.
An honest trade-off: the neighborhood is young, dense and concrete-heavy. It has no mature trees, no patina and none of the street life of the older neighborhoods. People come here for practicality, not charm.
What a residence in Keur Gorgui means
Assignment studio or one-bedroom — the most common format: kitchenette, workspace, shower room, in a building with services. It is the neighborhood's typical product.
Two- or three-bedroom relocation apartment — for a newly arrived family or two colleagues on the same project. Often rented by the quarter.
Residence with full services — regular cleaning, laundry, round-the-clock security, sometimes a reception desk and gym. This is what distinguishes a residence from an apartment rented directly from the owner.
Upper-floor apartment with a view — the height of the buildings gives an unusually open outlook over the city. This is the product that goes first, and it is often worth the extra cost on a long stay.
Two points to have clarified despite the uniform housing stock: the actual frequency of cleaning, which varies a lot from one residence to another, and the internet speed, if you work from home.
Where it is
The Keur Gorgui development occupies the north-central part of the Dakar peninsula, between Sacré-Cœur and the VDN highway. This in-between location explains much of its popularity with business travelers.
Toward the VDN, to the east, you quickly reach the highway serving the north and west of the city. It is the most practical area for anyone who travels around a lot, and the liveliest.
Toward Sacré-Cœur and Mermoz, to the west, the fabric becomes classic residential again, with everyday shops within walking distance.
The heart of the development is the quietest part: internal roads, recent buildings, little through traffic.
Two travel benchmarks to bear in mind. The Plateau is about twenty minutes away off-peak and much longer at rush hour. Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) in Diass is about an hour away: have a transfer arranged for your first arrival.
Living here for several months
The neighborhood is away from the sea and does not get the breeze that cools the western tip. From March to June, air conditioning therefore becomes a real criterion, and that is where the built-in generator really comes into its own: a nighttime power cut without ventilation is much harder to bear here than in Almadies.
From December to March, the trade wind makes the days mild and the nights cool; this is the best period, and the upper floors benefit most.
From July to October, the humidity of the rainy season (hivernage) is oppressive, as everywhere in the city, with downpours that can snarl traffic at rush hour.
As for availability, the neighborhood follows the professional and institutional calendar: new postings, the September return and conference periods fill the residences in waves. Book as soon as your dates are set; outside these peaks, there is more room to negotiate a length-of-stay discount.
Good to know & booking
The neighborhood has everything you need day to day within walking distance — shops, places to eat, pharmacies — which is not that common in Dakar. A vehicle is still useful for getting out of the area, but it is not essential day to day, and underground parking settles the question when you have one.
For a long stay, two habits are worth picking up early: the area has plenty of personal training on offer, and guided cultural tours of the historic center are the best way to get to know the city in your first weeks.
If you would rather have accommodation without building services at a lower rate, see our apartments for rent in Dakar. For a residence in the west, by the ocean, the residences in Almadies meet a different need, and the residences in Dakar cover the whole city. For a furnished apartment in a more central, leafier neighborhood, the furnished apartments in Mermoz are next door.
If you don't need the services, the apartments in Keur Gorgui have the same building amenities at a lower rate.
You secure the property by paying 20% of the total online, then pay the balance on arrival, usually in cash. For long stays, which are common here, an additional deposit may be requested: it is stated on the listing and follows the same policy. The monthly discount is negotiated directly with the owner or property manager. Tourist tax is paid on site.
Cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival in low season (June 1 – October 31) and 14 days in high season (November 1 – May 31); after that, the booking is final and the 20% is non-refundable. A booking canceled within 24 hours of confirmation is fully refunded if arrival is more than seven days away. Last-minute bookings are final upon confirmation, with one date change allowed up to 48 hours before arrival. If the owner cancels, we offer you an equivalent property in central Dakar, or we refund all fees in full. The resident rate is shown on every property for residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, on an account verified after a phone call.
Who is it for?
Assignments of several weeks to several months, for people who want an equipped home without having to check a building's condition from afar.
New postings, while looking for a permanent home: you settle in without furnishing a place or setting up utility meters, in a central neighborhood.
Long-term remote workers, for whom built-in backup power and a verified connection change the nature of the stay.
The Senegalese diaspora coming back for several weeks and looking for modern comfort in a central location, rather than the charm of an old neighborhood.
Frequently asked questions
What sets Keur Gorgui apart from other neighborhoods in Dakar?
Its uniformity. The development was built in one go in the 2010s, and almost all its buildings are the same age — and therefore have the same standard features: elevator, underground parking, generator, water tank, security guards. Elsewhere in the city, building condition is a gamble.
So what should I choose on?
The floor, the view and the level of service. The buildings are tall: the difference in noise and ventilation between a third floor and a ninth is clear, and there is a genuine view from the upper floors, which is rare in Dakar away from the seafront. Also ask about the cleaning frequency and internet speed.
Is the neighborhood pleasant?
It is practical rather than charming: young, dense and concrete-heavy, with no mature trees or established street life. On the other hand, everything you need day to day is within walking distance — shops, places to eat, pharmacies — which is not that common in Dakar.
What are the travel times?
The Plateau is about twenty minutes away off-peak, much longer at rush hour. The VDN, which runs alongside the area, gives quick access to the north and west. Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass is about an hour away.
Is it hot in Keur Gorgui?
Hotter than in the west of the city: the neighborhood is away from the sea and does not get the breeze from the tip. From March to June, air conditioning is a real criterion — and that is where the built-in generator really comes into its own, as a nighttime power cut without ventilation quickly becomes hard to bear.
Can I rent by the month?
Yes, it is the dominant use in the neighborhood, and the length-of-stay discount is negotiated directly with the owner or property manager. Book as soon as your dates are set: new postings, the September return and conference periods fill the residences in waves.
How does payment work?
You pay 20% online to secure the property, then the balance on arrival, usually in cash. For a long stay, an additional deposit may be requested; it is stated on the listing and follows the same cancellation policy. The tourist tax — 1,000 FCFA per person per night — is not included in the rates shown: it is collected on site by the owner, not by Senegal Rent. The amount is given for information only.
