Thiès is Senegal's crossroads. Everything heading north to Saint-Louis, everything heading down to the Petite Côte and the south, everything going east passes through it. It is also a city of industry, a garrison town, a university town and a crafts center — not a vacation destination, but one of the places in the country people most often come to for work.

Hence the need for a reliable, discreet furnished rental, available by the week or the month. This page brings together the serviced residences of Thiès: fully equipped apartments with a kitchen, in buildings that provide security and maintenance.

We are a Senegalese company and we put you in direct contact with the properties. The resident rate is shown on every listing.

Thiès & the serviced residence for stopovers and assignments

The city's location drives everything. An hour from Dakar on the toll highway, Thiès is where the main roads split: the northern road to Louga and Saint-Louis, the eastern one to Diourbel, Touba and Tambacounda, the southern one to Mbour and the coast. The city was also shaped by the railway — historically one of the great rail hubs of West Africa — and that crossroads role has left a lasting mark on its layout and economy.

This central position creates accommodation demand that is very different from that of tourist towns. Here, the guests are people at work: government assignments, professional training, companies working on construction sites in the region, staff passing through, sales reps covering several regions from a central base. Add to that the university community and a well-known crafts scene — the Manufacture sénégalaise des arts décoratifs, based in Thiès, produces tapestries that have made the city's name well beyond the country.

There is a third use, a very Senegalese one, and it weighs heavily on availability: family ceremonies. Naming ceremonies, weddings, funerals, returns from the diaspora — when a Thiès family hosts, it needs to house relatives coming from Dakar, other regions or abroad, sometimes for several days and in numbers. An apartment with a kitchen works far better than a string of rooms, which is why part of the local stock runs on short but frequent stays.

Finally, a word about the city itself, because it surprises those who only stop over. Thiès is greener, airier and much calmer than Dakar, with wide avenues, a big market and real neighborhood life. Many people who work in Dakar and stay here for the first time wonder why they did not do it sooner.

What a serviced residence in Thiès looks like

  • Furnished studio or one-bedroom — the format for assignments and training: kitchenette, shower room, workspace. The most common type in the stock.
  • Two-bedroom apartment — for a family, a stay of several weeks, or relatives coming for a ceremony.
  • Building services — security, housekeeping, sometimes laundry. The level varies: check the listing.
  • Generator — to be confirmed explicitly, as everywhere outside Dakar.
  • Monthly rental — common in this segment, with a long-stay discount to negotiate with the owner.

If you are looking to be hosted for a night or two, the city's hotels and guesthouses are a better fit. If you are coming for the beach, the Petite Côte is less than an hour to the south. A serviced residence in Thiès is for practical stays: you work there, host family there, or break your journey there.

Where you are

  • The center — government offices, the main market, shops and the train station. You can walk everywhere, and it is the most practical base for a short assignment.
  • The residential neighborhoods — quieter and greener, with larger units. The choice for stays of several weeks.
  • The Dakar road — for those commuting to the capital or to Diamniadio and back in the day.
  • The roads north and east — convenient if your travels regularly take you toward Louga, Diourbel or Touba.
  • The Manufacture and the workshops — Thiès crafts can be visited, and they are what the city is best known for.

When to go

Thiès is inland, without the moderating effect of the ocean: days are hotter than in Dakar and nights cooler. From November to February, the climate is genuinely pleasant and mornings can be chilly. From March to June, the heat rises sharply — that is when you appreciate air conditioning and a generator that holds up.

The rainy season (hivernage), from July to October, brings sometimes heavy rain and humid heat, but it remains a busy working season. For availability, what matters here is not the tourist seasons but the social and institutional calendar: the start of the academic year, training sessions, major family ceremonies and religious holidays fill the city all at once. If your stay falls during one of these periods, book early.

Good to know & booking

From Dakar, allow about an hour on the toll highway. Thiès is also the natural starting point for Lompoul and the north, and for the Petite Côte to the south — several travelers use it as a touring base rather than a stopover. Intercity transfers are easy to arrange from the city.

Once there, a vehicle or city taxis are enough: the city is more spread out than Dakar but far less congested. The main market is where you stock up when you have a kitchen, and it is one of the best supplied in the region.

To book, you pay 20% of the cost of the stay online — the booking fee, which secures your dates — and the balance directly to the residence on arrival. For long stays, the owner may ask for an additional deposit; it is then shown on the listing before booking and follows the same cancellation policy.

You can cancel free of charge up to 7 days before arrival in low season (June 1 – October 31) and 14 days in high season (November 1 – May 31); after that, the booking is final. If the owner cancels, we offer an equivalent solution or refund the fees in full. The resident rate is shown on every listing, applies to people living in Senegal as well as the Senegalese diaspora, and is activated on an account verified by phone. Finally, budget for the tourism promotion tax (TPT), 1,000 FCFA per person per night. It is paid directly to the property, which collects it — we do not — and the amount is given for guidance only.

Who is it for?

Work assignments and professional training: this is the core of local demand, and over three weeks an apartment with a kitchen beats a room. Families hosting a ceremony — naming ceremony, wedding, funeral — who need to house relatives coming from far away, often several of them. The university community and visiting lecturers or consultants. Sales reps and people on the road who cover several regions and find here the most convenient central base in the country. And travelers on a tour, for whom Thiès is a natural stopover between Dakar, the north and the coast.

If you are looking for the sea, rest or a vacation destination, this is not the place: the Petite Côte is less than an hour away and fills that role. You choose Thiès for its location.

What people end up appreciating is the pace. You come back in the evening, the heat drops, the avenues are wide and quiet, and you are an hour from Dakar without any of its drawbacks. Many assignments planned for a week get extended here, and it is not only a question of workload.

FAQ

Why stay in Thiès rather than Dakar?

For the location: Thiès is where the roads to the north, the east and the southern coast meet, an hour from Dakar on the toll highway. The city is also calmer, greener and less congested. It is the right choice if your travels regularly take you out of the capital.

Can you rent by the month?

Yes, it is common in this segment, as assignments and training often last more than a few weeks. The long-stay discount is negotiated directly with the owner.

Is it suitable for housing family coming for a ceremony?

It is actually one of the most frequent uses here. An apartment with a kitchen and several bedrooms works better than a string of hotel rooms when relatives come from Dakar, other regions or abroad.

Is there a generator?

It varies from one building to another and should be confirmed explicitly, especially from March to June when the heat rises: inland, days are noticeably hotter than on the coast.

When should I book?

As soon as your dates are set if they fall during the start of the academic year, a training session, a major ceremony or a religious holiday. Here, demand follows the social and institutional calendar, not the tourist seasons.

Is Thiès a good base for exploring?

Yes: the Petite Côte is less than an hour to the south, the Lompoul desert and the north are reachable in a day, and the roads east start here. Several travelers use it as a touring base.

What do I need to pay to book?

20% of the cost of the stay online, which secures your dates; the balance is paid at the residence on arrival. For long stays, the owner may ask for an additional deposit, shown on the listing before booking.
