The page exists, the properties are on their way. In the meantime, here are other options for your stay — and if you own a property in the area, now's the time to list it.

A day isn't a short stay. It's six usable hours. You arrive around 11 a.m., leave around 5 or 6 p.m., and in between you have to set up, eat lunch, keep the children busy, get through the hottest hours and pack up. There's no margin: what isn't ready when you arrive won't be.

That's why Yène is the best place near Dakar for this format. Forty kilometers, thirty to forty minutes along the coast road: the drive doesn't eat up the day. Elsewhere on the coast, you lose three hours on the road for six hours on site, and the trade-off no longer works.

Why day use works in Yène

The math is simple, and it's what decides. On the Petite Côte, in Saly or Ngaparou, allow three to four hours' round trip by road from Dakar: for a day out, that means leaving at 8 a.m. and getting back at 9 p.m., with children asleep in the car on the way home. For Yène, you leave at 10 a.m. and you're home for dinner.

Whatever you save on the drive, you get back in full on site. A day-use villa in Yène means an enclosed plot, a pool, a barbecue, shade, a kitchen and toilets — in other words, everything no public beach provides. You settle in, you stay put, and nobody spends the day watching the bags.

The beach is still right there, and it's a real bonus for a late-afternoon walk. But let's be precise: the Yène coast faces the open Atlantic, the swell hits head-on and there's no lifeguard station. You walk there, you watch the sunset, and the children swim in the pool. That's the right way to organize the day here.

What to settle before booking

Four questions decide how good a day will be, and almost nobody asks them. They take five minutes to sort out with the owner, whose contact details you get as soon as you book.

The actual arrival time. A day advertised as "10 a.m. to 6 p.m." may in practice start at 11 a.m. if the caretaker arrives later or if the house needs to be set straight after the day before. Get confirmation of the exact time you can come through the gate, and the latest departure time.

What's provided. Is the barbecue ready to use? Is charcoal included? Are there tables and chairs for your exact headcount, dishes, a fridge that's switched on? On a day rental, arriving with lunch but nothing to put it on or cook it with is the most common mistake.

Shade. Between noon and 4 p.m., this is the critical point. A garden without a straw shelter, a shade sail or mature trees makes the poolside unusable at exactly the time you're there. Ask for a photo taken at 2 p.m., not a brochure shot.

The number of people allowed. It's almost always capped and rarely written down. Give your real headcount, children included, before confirming — it's the number one source of friction on the day.

What "day use" means here

Family villa with pool and barbecue — the usual format: three to five bedrooms, but you only rent the outdoor space and the living areas. For ten to fifteen people, it's the simplest and cheapest setup.

Large house for gatherings — a big plot, a covered area for tables, a pool sized for a group, sometimes toilets you can reach from the garden. It's the format for birthdays and naming ceremonies with more than twenty people.

Beachfront villa — rarer and more expensive, with direct access to the sand. The right choice when the day centers on a walk and the sunset rather than on hosting.

Simple house with a small pool — two or three rooms, a modest plot. Enough for one or two families, and the most affordable option for a Sunday with six or eight people.

Where you are

Yène stretches along several kilometers of coastline south of Dakar, between the capital and Toubab Dialaw. For a day rental, the exact location of the house matters more than for a longer stay.

The residential seafront has most of the day-use villas, on large enclosed plots, with the beach a few dozen or a few hundred meters away.

The area around the village center is livelier and more convenient for last-minute top-ups — bread, ice, drinks — but more exposed to village noise.

The key thing to watch for a day rental: the access road. Many houses are reached by a sandy track for the last few hundred meters. If your guests are coming in ordinary city cars, get details on this stretch and set a meeting point — it's the main risk of the whole group running late.

When to go

From November to May, the dry season offers the best conditions: clear skies, dry air, bearable heat. Sundays and public holidays in this period are the most in demand, and houses are often booked several weeks in advance for holiday dates.

From June to October, the rainy season (hivernage) makes the air heavy and brings showers that are usually short and at night. Availability is much better, rates lower, and a day out is still entirely feasible — as long as there's a covered area in case of a squall.

On weekdays, availability is almost always immediate, even in high season. If your date is flexible, a Tuesday or Wednesday opens up the best houses in the area.

Good to know & booking

Do all your shopping before leaving Dakar: the village shops will help out in a pinch, but they can't supply a day for fifteen. Bring ice, plenty of water and sun protection, even if shade is advertised.

The hinterland is well suited to a late-afternoon horse ride along the shore, and the coast further south offers good surfing conditions in the morning, if your day starts early.

This page only includes houses that accept day rentals; the full selection, with overnight stays, is on the page of villas for rent in Yène, and houses with a pool on the page of villas with pool in Yène.

You pay 20% of the total online, which secures the date, then the balance to the owner on the day, most often in cash. When the day is shared among several people, this lets one person book and then collect from the others. Note: no tourist tax on a day rental. It's counted per person per night, and there's no overnight stay.

Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the chosen date in low season (June 1 – October 31) and 14 days in high season (November 1 – May 31); after that, the booking is firm and the 20% is non-refundable. A booking canceled within 24 hours of confirmation is fully refunded as long as the date is more than seven days away — useful when you book a birthday well in advance. Last-minute bookings are firm as soon as they're confirmed, with one change of date possible up to 48 hours before, which covers an event date that moves. If the owner cancels, we offer you an equivalent house on the south coast or refund all fees. The resident rate is shown on each house for residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, on an account verified after a phone call.

Who is it for?

Dakar families on a Sunday, first of all: it's the main use of this page. An outing with no luggage, no overnight stay to organize, forty minutes from home.

Medium-sized birthdays and naming ceremonies, when you're looking for an enclosed outdoor space with water and shade rather than a function room.

Groups of friends who want a day by the sea without committing to a full weekend, and who go home to sleep.

Expats and travelers passing through who are based in Dakar and want to see the south coast without spending two days on the trip.

Frequently asked questions

What are the hours for a day rental in Yène?

The usual format runs from 10 or 11 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m., but it varies from house to house. Get the exact arrival time and latest departure time confirmed before booking: a day advertised as 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. may start later if the house needs to be set straight.

Are the barbecue and charcoal provided?

Not always. Ask explicitly whether the barbecue is ready to use, whether charcoal is included, and whether there are tables, chairs and dishes for your exact headcount. Arriving with lunch but nothing to put it on or cook it with is the most common mistake with this format.

How many people can I bring?

The number is almost always capped by the owner and rarely stated in the listing. Give your real headcount, children included, before confirming the booking: it's the number one source of friction on the day.

Can you swim in the sea at Yène?

The coast faces the open Atlantic, the swell comes straight in, the beach shelves steeply and there's no lifeguard station. You walk there and watch the sunset; for the children's swimming, count on the house pool. That's the right way to organize the day here.

How long is the drive from Dakar?

Thirty to forty minutes along the coast road, for about forty kilometers. That's what makes the format work: elsewhere on the coast, a three- to four-hour round trip would eat up half the day.

Is there shade?

It depends entirely on the house, and it's the most critical point between noon and 4 p.m. Ask whether the garden has a straw shelter, a shade sail or mature trees, and ask for a photo taken in mid-afternoon rather than a brochure shot.

How does payment work, and is there a tourist tax?

You pay 20% online to secure the date, then the balance to the owner on the day, most often in cash. There's no tourist tax: it's counted per person per night, and a day rental involves none. When the cost is shared, this lets one person book and then collect from the others.
