Hotels for Rent in Somone

The page exists, the properties are on their way. In the meantime, here are other options for your stay — and if you own a property in the area, now's the time to list it.

Hotels in other areas

Somone is mostly rented by the villa, and that involves more planning than people expect: a car, a big first grocery run, meals to cook, and access to the lagoon you have to arrange yourself. For a week with the family, that is perfect. For three nights as a couple, it is a lot of logistics for very little time.

That is where a hotel changes everything. You arrive, you are welcomed, you have dinner on site, and the heart of what makes Somone — the lagoon, the birds, the pirogue at sunrise — is organized by the hotel. Several properties have their own jetty and their own boats: you don't go looking for a boatman, you just walk down to the water.

A short stay, with no planning

The difference lies in what you don't have to do. No shopping when you arrive, no cooking, no car required, no negotiating for a boat trip. Over a long weekend — the most common format in Somone for Dakar residents — that is half the time you have.

The second benefit is less obvious and often decisive: direct access to the lagoon. A lagoon-front villa has a view; it doesn't necessarily have a jetty, a pirogue, or someone who knows what time to go out. A hotel on the bank usually has all three. For anyone coming mainly for the birds and the mangrove, that is what makes the stay worthwhile.

The trade-off is the same as with any hotel: less space of your own, set mealtimes, and a rate counted per person rather than per property. Beyond four or five people, the equation flips and renting the whole house becomes the right choice again.

What a hotel in Somone looks like

Lagoon-front hotel — the most typical setup, with a terrace over the water, a jetty and often the property's own pirogues. This is what to aim for if the lagoon is your reason for coming.

Ocean-side hotel — closer to the beach and the breeze, with sea swimming a few steps away. The right choice for a classic beach vacation.

Hotel with pool and garden — useful here, since you can't swim in the lagoon: muddy bottom, big tidal range, current at the river mouth. The pool is the only guaranteed swim on the lagoon side.

Small boutique hotel — around ten rooms, run by the owners, with a shared table d'hôte. The best value in the village and the most personal welcome.

Two questions to ask before booking: does the property have a jetty and boats, and what is the actual walking distance to the ocean beach — often given as the crow flies, which means nothing here since you have to go around the lagoon.

Where you are

Somone is one hour forty minutes to two hours from Dakar on the toll highway, on the Petite Côte. The village is narrow and falls into three locations.

The lagoon front, to the north and east, is where the properties with a jetty are, facing the nature reserve and the mangrove. Complete peace and quiet.

The sand spit, between lagoon and ocean, is the most versatile location: a few hundred meters on foot to either side.

The area toward Ngaparou, to the south, puts you closer to shops and restaurants, five minutes away.

Without a car, your choice of location becomes crucial: from the lagoon front, getting to the ocean beach means going around. Ask for the actual walking time.

When to go

From November to April, the dry season brings clear skies and cool mornings. It is the reserve's peak birding season, when the migratory birds are there: the best time for a lagoon-focused stay, and also high season.

From May to June, the water warms up, the humidity hasn't set in yet and visitor numbers have dropped. Probably the best window of the year, all things considered.

From July to October, the rainy season (hivernage) makes the mangrove spectacular and the landscape entirely green. Muggy heat, short and often nighttime showers, lowest rates. It is mosquito season at dusk, more so on the lagoon side: check the mosquito nets.

Whatever the season, go out early. On the lagoon, the light and the birds are at their best before 8 a.m., and that is exactly what a hotel with a jetty lets you arrange effortlessly.

Good to know & booking

This is one of the few stays on the Petite Côte you can do without a car: transfers from Dakar or the airport can be arranged in advance through intercity transfers, and the property takes over once you are there.

Everything is right on your doorstep: pirogue trips on the lagoon, paddleboarding and kayaking to approach the mangrove quietly, and birdwatching — the Somone reserve is one of the best sites on the coast.

If there are more than four or five of you, compare with the villas for rent in Somone, where the price per person quickly becomes more favorable, and with the villas with sea view if the view is your main criterion. For a home-style welcome rather than a hotel, the guesthouses in Ngaparou are five minutes away.

You book by paying 20% of the total online, which secures the room; the balance is paid to the property on arrival, usually in cash. For a weekend decided at short notice, this lets you lock it in without paying everything up front. An additional deposit may be requested in high season; it is shown on the listing and follows the same policy. Tourist tax paid on site.

Cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival in low season (June 1 – October 31) and 14 days in high season (November 1 – May 31); after that, the booking is final and the 20% is non-refundable. A booking canceled within 24 hours of confirmation is fully refunded if arrival is more than seven days away. Last-minute bookings are final upon confirmation, with one date change allowed up to 48 hours before. If the property cancels, we offer you an equivalent option in Somone, Ngaparou or Saly, or refund all fees in full. The resident rate is shown on every listing for residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, on an account verified after a phone call.

Who is it for?

Couples and short stays, two to four nights, where the logistics of a villa don't have time to pay off.

Travelers without a car: this is one of the few places on the Petite Côte where a full stay is possible without a vehicle, as long as you choose your location well.

Bird and pirogue lovers, who are much better off staying at a property with its own jetty and boats than looking for a boatman every morning.

Dakar residents heading down for a long weekend who want to arrive on Friday evening without having done any shopping.

Frequently asked questions

Hotel or villa in Somone?

For fewer than four or five people on a short stay, the hotel wins: no shopping, no cooking, no car required, and lagoon outings are organized for you. Beyond that, the villa becomes better value per person again, as long as you accept the logistics that come with it.

Can you get to Somone without a car?

Yes, and it is one of the few places on the Petite Côte where that is realistic, as long as you choose your location well. The transfer from Dakar or the airport is arranged in advance, and the property takes over on site for outings and meals.

What does a hotel with a jetty offer?

Direct access to the lagoon. A lagoon-front villa has a view; it doesn't necessarily have a jetty, a pirogue, or someone who knows what time to go out. A hotel on the bank usually has all three — decisive if you are coming for the birds and the mangrove.

Can you swim in the lagoon?

No: muddy bottom, a big tidal range that exposes mudflats twice a day, and a strong current at the river mouth. It is scenery and a place for boating. Swimming is on the ocean side, or in the property's pool.

How far is the ocean beach?

It depends entirely on the hotel's location, and the distance is often given as the crow flies — which means nothing here, since you have to go around the lagoon. Ask for the actual walking time, especially if you are coming without a car.

What is the best time to go?

November to April for the birds and the light, with the high season that comes with it. May to June is probably the best window of the year: warmer water, no humidity, fewer visitors. From July to October, everything is green and rates are at their lowest.

How does payment work?

You pay 20% online to secure the room, then the balance to the property on arrival, usually in cash. For a weekend decided at short notice, this lets you lock it in without paying everything up front. The tourist tax is added to the rate: allow 1,000 FCFA per person per night, paid on site to the owner. Senegal Rent does not collect it; we mention it for your budget.
