The page exists, the properties are on their way. In the meantime, here are other options for your stay — and if you own a property in the area, now's the time to list it.

Lake Retba (Pink Lake) is the only place in Senegal where you can rent a house by the water without having access to any swimming at all. The lake is hypersaline — you float effortlessly, but you do not swim in it: the salt stings your eyes, burns the smallest scratch, and the water is a working site where salt harvesters are busy all day long. As for the ocean, it is on the other side of the dunes, several kilometers away along sand tracks, with a shore break that forgives nothing.

The result: in a villa at the Pink Lake, the pool is not an extra. It is the only water you will have during your stay. No other area on this site shows such a clear gap between a house with a pool and a house without one.

Why a pool changes a stay at the Pink Lake

People come to the Pink Lake in groups — extended families, groups of friends, birthdays, naming ceremonies, reunions — and often for just one day or a weekend. In that format, the question is never "what are we going to visit" but "where will everyone be for six hours". The lake is something you look at, photograph at sunset, ride along on a quad bike or on horseback; it does not keep anyone busy all afternoon.

The pool does. It keeps the children occupied, it gives a gathering of thirty people a center, it lets the adults stay seated. It is, quite simply, the key feature of an events villa here — along with the barbecue and the shaded area — and that is why you find one in almost every house built for this purpose.

Three checks are essential, specific to this setting. Size first: a four-by-three-meter pool suits a family, not a naming ceremony for forty people; ask for the actual dimensions, not a wide-angle photo. Filtration next, because sand from the dunes blows constantly and a poorly maintained pool shows immediately. And shade, because there are hardly any trees here: without a straw shelter (paillote), a shade sail or a pergola, the poolside is unusable from noon to 4 p.m.

What "with pool" covers here

Events villa with a large pool — the Pink Lake's flagship format. A large enclosed plot, a covered area for tables, a barbecue, a pool sized for a group. This is the house for birthdays and naming ceremonies, rented by the day as well as for the weekend.

Family villa with three to five bedrooms — more conventional, with a garden and a standard-size pool. The right format for two families over a weekend, without the logistics of a big party.

Dune house — built set back, between the lake and the ocean, with an open view and plenty of quiet. It is reached by sand track and the pool is essential, since there is nothing else close at hand.

Villa with event space — a hybrid layout, where the outdoor area is designed to host more people than just the occupants: restrooms accessible from the garden, a secondary kitchen, parking. Check the maximum number of people allowed; it is rarely stated in the listing.

Where you are

The Pink Lake is about thirty kilometers northeast of Dakar, roughly an hour's drive depending on which way you leave the city. The site is divided into three distinct sectors.

The south shore, the most accessible, has most of the accommodation and activities. It is the most practical sector, with paved road access to close by and a real concentration of services.

The north shore and the east are quieter and more spread out, with large plots and more open views. They are reached by sand tracks whose condition varies with the season.

The strip of dunes toward the ocean, a few kilometers away, offers a spectacular landscape of shifting dunes. It is the terrain for quad bike and buggy outings and 4x4 crossings, but there is almost no accommodation there.

One point to settle before booking, especially for an event: the type of access right up to the gate. If your guests are coming in regular city cars, a sandy track at the end of the route can be a real logistical problem. Ask about the last five hundred meters.

When the pool matters most

From November to February, the climate is dry and mild, the nights cool, and it is the season for big year-end gatherings. The pool then serves as much as a living space as for swimming — people settle around it rather than soaking in it for hours. It is the most requested period.

From March to June, the heat rises sharply on this site with no natural shade and no direct sea influence. This is when the pool becomes truly essential: without one, a day at the Pink Lake in May is hard going.

From July to October, the rainy season (hivernage) changes the landscape: the vegetation turns green again, the lake level rises and its pink hue fades — worth knowing if you are coming for the color, which is strongest in the dry season, around midday and when the wind is light. It is hot and humid, visitor numbers drop, and the pool remains the only comfortable place in the afternoon.

Good to know & booking

Stock up before leaving Dakar: shops on site are limited and not set up to supply a group. A car is essential, and a high-clearance vehicle is preferable once you leave the south shore.

Once there, you can explore the site on a horse or camel ride along the shores, and you can watch the salt harvest in late morning, when the harvesters are in the water. Bring fresh water to rinse off if you go into the lake: the salt dries into a crust.

This page includes only houses with a pool; the full range is on the page of villas for rent at the Pink Lake. For a one-day event, go directly to the day-rental villas at the Pink Lake, whose terms are adapted to that format. And for a couple or small family looking for something lighter, the chalets at the Pink Lake meet a different need.

You book by paying 20% of the total online, which secures the house, with the balance paid to the owner on arrival, usually in cash. When a villa is rented for an event shared among several participants, this system makes collecting money much simpler. An additional deposit may be requested for large houses in high season; it is shown on the listing and follows the same policy.

Cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival in low season (June 1 – October 31) and 14 days in high season (November 1 – May 31); after that the booking is final and the 20% is non-refundable. A booking canceled within 24 hours of confirmation is fully refunded if arrival is more than seven days away. Last-minute bookings are final upon confirmation, with one possible change of dates up to 48 hours before — useful when an event date moves. If the owner cancels, we offer you an equivalent house around the lake or on the northern coast, or refund all fees in full. The resident rate is displayed on each house for residents of Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora, on an account verified after a phone call. Add the tourist tax to your budget: 1,000 FCFA per person per night, collected on site by the establishment, not by Senegal Rent. Amount given as a guide.

Who is it for?

Organizers of family events — naming ceremonies, birthdays, reunions — looking for an enclosed venue an hour from Dakar with water, shade and room for tables. That is the Pink Lake's number one use.

Dakar families who want a change of scene for a weekend without driving to the Petite Côte, and for whom the dunes are change enough.

Groups of friends combining quad bikes, horse riding and an evening together: you come back covered in sand and salt, and the pool is what makes the rest of the day enjoyable.

And finally, travelers passing through, stopping between Dakar and the north of the country, who want to see the lake without sleeping in the city — as long as they accept that there is no natural swimming here.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim in the Pink Lake?

You can get in and float, which many visitors do for a few minutes, but you do not swim in it. The water is hypersaline: it stings your eyes, burns the smallest scratch, and leaves a salt crust as it dries. It is also a working site where salt harvesters are busy. Bring fresh water to rinse off.

Is there a beach you can reach from the Pink Lake?

The ocean is on the other side of the strip of dunes, several kilometers away along sand tracks. You go there by 4x4 or quad bike, as part of an outing, and the shore break is strong. It is not a family swimming beach within walking distance of the accommodation — hence the importance of the pool.

What pool size do I need for an event?

Ask for the actual dimensions rather than relying on photos, which are often taken with a wide-angle lens. A four-by-three-meter pool suits a family, not forty people. Also check the maximum number of guests the owner allows: it is rarely stated in the listing.

Is the lake always pink?

No. The color is strongest in the dry season, around midday and when the wind is light, when the salt concentration is at its highest. During the rainy season (hivernage), the level rises and the color fades noticeably. If you are coming specifically for that, choose the period from November to June.

How long is the drive from Dakar?

About an hour for some thirty kilometers, depending on which way you leave the capital. The south shore is reachable by paved road to close by; the other sectors are reached by sand tracks of varying condition. Ask about the last five hundred meters if your guests are coming in regular city cars.

Is there shade around the pools?

Not naturally: the site is all dunes, with very few trees. Shade therefore comes from what the house has installed — straw shelter, shade sail, pergola. It is something to check explicitly, because from noon to 4 p.m. a poolside with no shade is unusable, especially from March to June.

How does payment work?

You pay 20% online to secure the house, then the balance to the owner on arrival, usually in cash. For an event shared among several participants, this makes collecting money simpler. An additional deposit may be requested for large houses in high season; it is indicated on the listing.
