Since August 22, 2026, a hundred kilometers of highway have linked Mbour to Kaolack via Fatick. The press almost unanimously ran the headline that the Sine Saloum was getting closer to Dakar.
That is true for Kaolack. For Ndangane, Fimela, Palmarin and Djiffer — in other words, the places where you actually go to spend three nights by the water — it is more complicated. And it is not us saying so: it is the residents of these communes, on the very day of the inauguration.
What has opened
| Opening date | Saturday, August 22, 2026, inauguration in Thiadiaye |
| Length | 100 km of highway, plus 15 km of connecting roads |
| Interchanges | Three: Thiadiaye, Fatick, Kaolack |
| Mbour–Kaolack toll | 3,000 FCFA (light vehicle), i.e. 30 F/km |
| Dakar–Kaolack toll | 6,500 FCFA (light vehicle) over 184 km, i.e. 35 F/km |
| Project cost | 738 million dollars, Senegal – China partnership |
| Construction jobs | about 3,000 direct jobs, some twenty Senegalese SMEs |
The timing was no accident: the opening was set for the eve of the Gamou, precisely to absorb pilgrim traffic toward Tivaouane and Kaolack. A highway opened for a pilgrimage says a lot about how much the major religious gatherings weigh on the country's traffic.
The toll, and the 15,000-franc rumor
In the days after the opening, a claim spread on social media: 15,000 FCFA one way, 13,000 F round trip between Dakar and Kaolack. The national highway company, Société nationale des autoroutes du Sénégal, denied it on August 24 and published its rates: 6,500 FCFA for Dakar–Kaolack and 3,000 FCFA for the Mbour–Kaolack section alone, for a light vehicle.
We note in passing that other figures are still circulating, including on reputable sites — a range of 3,500 to 4,000 F for the trip. Go by the operator's rates, and have the money ready to pay on exit.
The system is a closed toll: your entry is recorded, and you only pay when you exit — at Thiadiaye, Fatick or Kaolack. So you do not stop three times. Toll cards are now interoperable with the Ila Touba highway, and interoperability is due to be extended to the airport highway.
Three interchanges, and what they really serve
This is the heart of the matter, and it is what the inauguration articles do not say. A hundred kilometers with three entry and exit points means that between two interchanges, the highway crosses the country without serving it.
On the very day of the opening, the collective defending the Ndiosmone – Fimela – Djiffer road publicly called for more entry and exit points, demanding an access at Médina Dokh, in the commune of Tattaguine. Its president stated that local residents' concerns had not been taken into account during construction.
And Ndiosmone, Fimela and Djiffer are exactly the gateways to the maritime Saloum: the lodges of the bolongs (mangrove channels), Mar Lodj, the Djiffer point, Palmarin.
What it changes, stay by stay
Kaolack and the groundnut basin: a clear gain
This is the trip the highway was built for, and it is transformed. You stay on an expressway from Dakar to Kaolack, with two possible stops.
Toubacouta, Sokone, the Niombato: a real gain
You exit at Kaolack and head south. This is the part of the Saloum best served by the new infrastructure. See our campements (eco-lodges) in Toubacouta, our hotels in Toubacouta and our campements in Sokone.
Ndangane, Fimela, Mar Lodj, Palmarin: a partial gain
You exit at Fatick, then take the ordinary road to the delta. The highway gets you to the gateway of the Saloum faster; it does not take you all the way. The last stretch is still what it was — and that is precisely what the collective is asking to change.
Our accommodation in this area: lodges in Fimela and Simal, campements in Mar Lodj, hotels in Ndangane, lodges in Palmarin.
The Petite Côte: little change
Saly, Nianing, Somone and Mbour were already served by the Dakar–Mbour highway. The new section starts where your trip used to end. On the other hand, Joal-Fadiouth and the road down to Palmarin benefit from the Thiadiaye interchange.
Casamance by road: a mixed picture
The road to Ziguinchor goes through Kaolack, then through The Gambia. The first third of the trip is much improved; the other two thirds — crossing The Gambia with its formalities, then Lower Casamance — are unchanged. For a stay in Cap Skirring or Ziguinchor, flying and the ferry remain the serious options; the highway improves the road without making it short.
What we do not know yet
A point of honesty that surprised us: no official time saving has been published. Neither the ministry, nor the operator, nor the road works agency has announced a reference travel time between Dakar and Kaolack on the new highway.
We could have written "two hours instead of four", as you read here and there. We will not: nobody has measured it publicly, and an invented travel time, on a road you take with children and a booking at the other end, helps no one. We will update this article as soon as an official figure comes out.
Also still pending: the possible opening of new interchanges, demanded by local residents, and the extension of toll card interoperability to the airport highway.
Three tips before you hit the road
- Have cash for the toll if you do not have a card: 3,000 F from Mbour, 6,500 F from Dakar for a light vehicle. Payment is made on exit.
- Find your interchange before you leave, not while driving. There are only three, and missing one costs you kilometers.
- Do not plan your departure around a travel time you read somewhere. Leave early, as before, and enjoy the time saved rather than spending it in advance.

Frequently asked questions
When did the Mbour–Fatick–Kaolack highway open?
On Saturday, August 22, 2026, with an inauguration in Thiadiaye by the President of the Republic. The opening was timed for the eve of the Gamou to absorb pilgrim traffic.
How much is the toll?
3,000 FCFA for a light vehicle on the Mbour–Kaolack section (100 km) and 6,500 FCFA for Dakar–Kaolack (184 km), according to the rates published by the Société nationale des autoroutes du Sénégal on August 24, 2026. The figures of 15,000 F one way and 13,000 F round trip that circulated on social media have been officially denied.
How much time do you save between Dakar and Kaolack?
No official travel time has been published to date. Figures are circulating, but none comes from the operator or the ministry. We prefer not to put one forward.
Where can you get on and off the highway?
At three interchanges only: Thiadiaye, Fatick and Kaolack. It is a closed toll, meaning your entry is recorded and you pay on exit. Residents along the Ndiosmone – Fimela – Djiffer road are asking for additional access points.
Does the highway serve Ndangane, Fimela or Palmarin?
Not directly. You exit at Fatick, then reach the delta on the ordinary road. The time saving is real on the first part of the trip, zero on the last.
Does it change anything for getting to Casamance?
The first third of the road trip is improved. Crossing The Gambia and Lower Casamance are unchanged. For Ziguinchor and Cap Skirring, flying and the ferry remain the most serious options.
