If you are planning a trip to Senegal around school holidays, you are looking at the wrong calendar. The country's largest population movements are religious — six million people in Touba in one day, the equivalent of a third of the country gathered in a single city — and their dates move back eleven days every year. Nobody tells you until you start looking for a room.
This page is not a cultural events listing. It answers one question only: when should you book, and where?
The next twelve months at a glance
| When | What | Where | Impact on accommodation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 31 – Nov. 13, 2026 | Youth Olympic Games | Dakar, Diamniadio, Saly | Very high — 5,200 rooms reserved for delegations |
| Nov. 19 – Dec. 19, 2026 | Dak'Art, 16th Biennale | Dakar | High — one month, 50,000 foreign visitors in 2024 |
| December 2026 | Fanal of Saint-Louis | Saint-Louis | Local, over a few nights |
| Late December 2026 | End-of-year holidays | Petite Côte, Dakar, Casamance | High — peak season |
| ≈ March 10, 2027 (provisional) | Korité (Eid al-Fitr) | Nationwide | Transportation overloaded, diaspora returns |
| May 2027 (date to be announced) | Saint-Louis Jazz, 35th edition | Saint-Louis | High for a mid-sized city |
| ≈ May 16, 2027 (provisional) | Tabaski (Eid al-Adha) | Nationwide | Transportation overloaded, sheep on the roads |
| ≈ July 22, 2027 (provisional) | Grand Magal of Touba | Touba and the roads leading to it | Extreme — over 6 million pilgrims |
| ≈ Aug. 14, 2027 (provisional) | Gamou / Mawlid | Tivaouane, Kaolack, Médina Baye | High — Thiès region under pressure |
Pay close attention to the "provisional" labels. Religious dates are not calculated, they are observed: the official date is set by the relevant commission only a few days before the event. We give the estimate because it helps you book time off; do not buy a non-changeable ticket based on it.
Senegal's two calendars
Essentially, two calendars overlap, and they do not follow the same rules.
The religious calendar follows the lunar cycle. It moves back about eleven days a year, involves millions of people, and plays out outside Dakar: Touba, Tivaouane, Kaolack, and Popenguine for the Catholic pilgrimage. These are the only times of year when the whole country is on the move at once.
The cultural calendar has fixed dates or dates announced months in advance: the Biennale, the jazz festival, the Fanal. It involves tens of thousands of people, not millions, but it is concentrated on one city and four weeks — which, for accommodation, amounts to the same thing.
A third calendar comes on top: the seasons. The peak tourist season runs from November to April, the rainy season from July to October. Our climate and best time to go page covers it in detail.
Fall 2026: seven weeks in a row
This is the tightest stretch Dakar has seen in a long time, and it has gone unnoticed because nobody connects the two pieces.
The Youth Olympic Games take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026. It is the first Olympic event ever held on the African continent. The official hotel allocation — 74 hotels, 5,200 rooms — is contracted for delegations and officials, not for the public.
The Dak'Art Biennale opens on November 19, six days after the Games close, and runs until December 19. The 2024 edition drew 50,000 foreign visitors.
Then come the end-of-year holidays.
In other words: from October 31 to December 31, Dakar's accommodation stock gets no breathing room. If you are waiting for a lull between the two to book for less, there will not be one. See our hotels in Dakar, our apartments in Dakar and our serviced residences in Dakar.
The major religious gatherings
The Grand Magal of Touba
It is by far the largest gathering in Senegal. The Magal commemorates the departure into exile of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride brotherhood, on 18 Safar of the Hijri calendar. The 2026 edition, on Sunday, August 2, expected more than six million pilgrims — a figure from the organizing committee, reported by RTS.
What to know when traveling:
- In Touba, people stay with families, not in hotels. The city hosts its pilgrims through the hospitality of families and dahiras (religious associations); there is no hotel capacity on the scale of the event, and we do not offer accommodation there.
- The road is the real issue. The Dakar–Touba route becomes impassable for two to three days. Buses and bush taxis (sept-place) are packed, transportation prices soar, and return traffic is as heavy as the outbound journey.
- Dakar empties, then fills up again. During the Magal, part of the capital leaves. Shops slow down, some restaurants close. It is not the time for a city break.
- Demand spills over into the regions along the way. If you need to be in the area, look at our serviced residences in Thiès, on the route.
The Gamou, or Mawlid
Celebrating the birth of the Prophet, the Gamou draws crowds to Tivaouane (Tijaniyya) and to Médina Baye in Kaolack (followers of Niass), with nights of religious chanting. The 2026 edition was set for Tuesday, August 25. Same logic as the Magal: the pressure is regional, not in Dakar, and it is felt first on the roads to Thiès and Kaolack.
Korité and Tabaski
The two major Muslim holidays do not bring in tourists — they bring the Senegalese diaspora home, and that is a completely different effect.
In the two to three weeks before Tabaski, flights to Dakar fill up, airfares rise, sheep take over sidewalks and roads, and families host. Accommodation demand shifts toward long stays and entire properties — a furnished apartment for three weeks rather than a room for three nights. Our long-stay discounts apply automatically beyond a certain number of nights.
One point foreign calendars always miss: in Senegal, these holidays are often celebrated over two days. In 2026, Tabaski was celebrated on Wednesday, May 27 by those following the Coordination des musulmans du Sénégal, aligned with the sighting in Saudi Arabia, and on Thursday, May 28 by the majority, following CONACOC, which had not sighted the crescent moon from Senegal. This is not a glitch: it has been the rule for decades. Expect the country to slow down for two days, not one.
The cultural highlights
Dak'Art, the Biennale
Every two years, a month of contemporary African art, with an official selection at three venues in the Plateau and an OFF program that spreads across the whole city. The dedicated page covers accommodation in detail.
Saint-Louis Jazz
The oldest jazz festival in West Africa. The 34th edition was held from May 13 to 17, 2026; the 35th is expected in May 2027, with no date announced so far.
Saint-Louis is a small city with limited accommodation, concentrated on the island and on the Langue de Barbarie. During the festival, accommodation capacity is the limiting factor, not the crowds: of all the events on this list, this is the one where booking late costs you the most options. See our serviced residences in Saint-Louis and our apartments in Saint-Louis.
The Fanal of Saint-Louis
Every December, giant lanterns made of wood and paper — often replicas of the Governor's Palace or the Great Mosque — parade through the city at night. The tradition dates back to the 18th century, when the signares went to midnight Mass preceded by lantern bearers. Banned under Senghor's presidency, it was revived in the early 2000s.
It is an event lasting one to a few nights, not a week: the impact on accommodation is real but short.
Resident or visitor: not the same calendar
If you live in Senegal, these dates are not travel opportunities but constraints to work around. The right question becomes: where to go while everyone else is elsewhere. On Magal weekend, the Petite Côte and La Somone are surprisingly quiet. Between waves of events, February and March offer the best weather-to-crowds ratio of the year. And the resident discount applies all year round, including during events.
If you are coming from abroad, the rule is the opposite: these dates are precisely what makes a trip memorable, provided you plan for them. A Gamou in Tivaouane or a month of Biennale is worth the trip in itself. But do not discover them on arrival: book your accommodation before you know the program, not after.
Booking around an event: the method
| Type of event | Book at least | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Major international event (Youth Olympics, Biennale) | 3 to 6 months ahead | The detailed program comes out after the accommodation is taken |
| Festival in a mid-sized city (Saint-Louis) | 2 to 3 months ahead | Local capacity is small and fills up all at once |
| Religious holiday (Korité, Tabaski, Magal) | 1 to 2 months ahead | The exact date is only known late, but the week is |
| End-of-year holidays | 4 to 6 months ahead | Peak season and family demand at the same time |
Three things do not change, event or not:
- You pay 20% online — our booking fee — and the balance directly to the owner or property on arrival. No paying in full months ahead for a stay that has not started. Details are on why rent with Senegal Rent.
- The resident discount applies as of right, including during periods of high demand.
- Cancellation deadlines depend on the arrival season, and November 1 marks the switch to high season: read our cancellation policy before confirming.
Bring cash too: during major gatherings, card terminals get overloaded and many shops do not have one. Our money and payment page explains what is paid in cash, and getting around Senegal covers transportation and its real prices.
What we do not know yet
In the interest of honesty, and because these gaps will be filled over the year:
- The 2027 religious dates given here are astronomical estimates. The official dates will be announced a few days beforehand, and may result in two celebrations.
- The 35th edition of Saint-Louis Jazz is expected in May 2027; no date has been announced.
- Ticketing and the detailed program for Dak'Art 2026 had not been published as of September 12, 2026.
- The exact dates of the Fanal are set locally, often late.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest event in Senegal?
The Grand Magal of Touba, beyond any comparison. The August 2, 2026 edition expected more than six million pilgrims. It is a Mouride pilgrimage, not a tourist event, and the city relies on family hospitality rather than hotels.
Why do the dates change every year?
Because Muslim holidays follow the Hijri lunar calendar, which is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. The Magal, the Gamou, Korité and Tabaski therefore move back ten days or so each year, and their exact date is set by sighting the crescent moon, only a few days beforehand.
Can Tabaski really be celebrated on two different days in Senegal?
Yes, and it happens often. In 2026, part of the country celebrated on May 27, following the sighting in Saudi Arabia, and the majority on May 28, following the national commission that observes from Senegal. Expect two slow days rather than one.
How far ahead should I book for a major event?
Three to six months ahead for an international event like the Games or the Biennale, two to three months for a festival in a mid-sized city like Saint-Louis, four to six months for the end-of-year holidays. For religious holidays, the week is known well in advance even if the day is not: book around the week.
Is there a quiet period in Dakar in fall 2026?
No. The Youth Olympic Games end on November 13, the Biennale opens on the 19th, and the end-of-year holidays follow. From October 31 to December 31, Dakar's accommodation stock gets no breathing room.
Is it a good idea to travel during a major religious holiday?
To discover the country, yes — a Gamou or a Magal is an experience nothing else can replace. To get around, no: the roads concerned are gridlocked for two to three days, public transportation is packed, and some shops close. Plan your itinerary around it rather than letting it catch you out.
