From October 31 to November 13, 2026, Senegal hosts the Youth Olympic Games. It is the first Olympic event ever held on the African continent, it brings together about 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17, and it takes place across three zones: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
You will find the competition schedule everywhere. This page is about something else, because it is the question we can answer better than anyone and that nobody else is covering: where are you going to sleep?
The fact nobody is telling you
The hotel arrangements for the Games have been locked in since April 2026: 74 hotels, 5,200 rooms, spread across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, contracted through an agreement between the organizing committee, the Ministry of Tourism and the federation of tourism industry professionals.
These 5,200 rooms are reserved for delegations and officials. They are not for the public.
This is not our own inference. Two months before the opening, the Senegalese press reported that the authorities themselves were worried about the capacity to house visitors and those accompanying the athletes — in other words, the families coming to watch a fifteen-year-old compete, who are not on any accreditation list.
Add to that what we looked for and did not find: no hotel price controls have been announced, no requisitions, and no official accommodation platform for the general public. We point this out because it is verified by its absence, not because it suits us: over these two weeks, housing for visitors is left to the market.
The practical consequence fits in one sentence. If your stay overlaps the period from October 31 to November 13 in any of the three zones, book now. Not in October.
Where to stay depending on what you are coming to see
The first thing to understand, and it catches out a lot of people: the "Dakar Arena" and the "Dakar Expo Center" are not in Dakar. They are in Diamniadio, about thirty kilometers away. A ticket for badminton or fencing is not in the same city as a ticket for track and field.
| Zone | What takes place there | Where to stay |
|---|---|---|
| Dakar | Swimming, athletics, 3×3 basketball, breaking, skateboarding, rugby sevens, taekwondo, road cycling | Plateau, Médina, Les Almadies, Ngor — close to the Iba Mar Diop complex and the Corniche Ouest |
| Diamniadio | Opening ceremony, archery, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, judo, boxing, table tennis, equestrian | Little accommodation on site: stay in Dakar or toward Mbour, and travel in |
| Saly | Beach volleyball, beach handball, beach wrestling, coastal rowing, triathlon, sailing | Saly, Ngaparou, Somone, Mbour, Nianing |
In Dakar, the best option for a two-week stay remains a furnished apartment, rented by neighborhood, which lets you cook. For a short stay, the guesthouses in Dakar and the hotels in the capital cover every budget.
For Diamniadio, let us be clear: there is no comparable accommodation base. Two establishments were due to be refurbished by the government before the end of September 2026. The realistic solution is to stay in Dakar and take the TER (regional express train), or to stay toward the Petite Côte if you are combining with Saly.
Saly: by far the tightest zone
Saly hosts six disciplines at a single venue, Saly Plage Ouest, and the venue is in continuous use from October 31 to November 13. The authorities expect 528 athletes and more than 15,000 spectators in this zone alone.
Two moments concentrate the pressure. The peak from November 9 to 13, with beach handball and sailing running at the same time. And November 13, the day of the closing concert on Saly beach — the one evening when the whole region will converge on the same place.
If you are coming for the beach events, the choice is simple: Saly itself to be within walking distance of the venue, or Somone and Ngaparou a few kilometers away for quiet and more availability. A villa in Saly shared between several families often costs less than separate rooms, and it is the type of accommodation that will stay available the longest.
A word for those who are not coming for the Games: if you were looking for a quiet Petite Côte in early November, shift your dates by two weeks. From November 15, the region returns to its normal season — and that is the start of the best time of year.
Tickets: what they really cost
Official ticket sales opened to the general public on August 10, 2026, on the tickets.dakar2026.org platform. Nearly one million tickets are on sale — about 458,000 for Dakar, 341,000 for Diamniadio and 165,000 for Saly.
| Session | Price |
|---|---|
| Sporting event, category B | 1,000 to 2,000 FCFA |
| Sporting event, category A | 2,000 to 3,000 FCFA |
| Day pass in Saly | 1,500 FCFA |
| Closing concert, Saly | 5,000 FCFA |
| Road cycling, triathlon | Free |
| Fan Zones | Free, with online reservation |
| Opening ceremony | From 2,000 to 40,000 FCFA depending on category |
A word of caution about the last line. You will read almost everywhere that tickets for the Games "cost between 1,000 and 5,000 FCFA". That is true for sporting events. It is not true for the opening ceremony: the official ticketing site lists categories well above 5,000 FCFA, up to 40,000 FCFA, and boxes at a completely different level. Check session by session on the official platform rather than relying on a range copied from one news report to the next.
Three practical points: payment is by Visa card, tickets are neither refundable nor cancelable, and purchases are capped at sixteen tickets per session — ten for the opening ceremony, gymnastics and judo.
Finally, more than 300,000 tickets are set aside for young people, schools, associations and sports clubs. If you are in Senegal and work with young people, that is your way in.
Getting around between the three zones
This is the constraint to factor in before choosing where to stay, because the three zones are not next to each other.
| Route | How |
|---|---|
| Dakar → Diamniadio | TER, about 45 minutes, 1,500 FCFA in 2nd class, a train every ten minutes |
| Dakar → Saly | By road only, via the highway — allow a good hour and a half |
| Diamniadio → Saly | By road, under an hour |
| Within Dakar | BRT (400 FCFA), negotiated taxis, ride-hailing apps |
The TER is the key to the Dakar – Diamniadio link, and by far the most reliable option on busy days. Its extension to the airport was committed to by the government for the end of September 2026: at the time of writing, commercial opening has not been confirmed.
Two things we do not know, and we would rather say so. No free public transportation for spectators has been announced, and no spectator shuttle service between the three zones had been made public at the time of writing. A traffic plan exists but has not been published. This information should come out in October — keep an eye on it if your accommodation is far from your event.
Our page on getting around Senegal details the fares and how each mode of transportation works.
What is happening outside the stadiums
The cultural program involves 5,000 young artists and technicians and 500 craftspeople, with the Maison de la Culture Douta Seck as the crafts hub, stages in Dakar's suburbs, and events at the African Renaissance Monument, the Grand Théâtre National and in Saly.
The Olympic flame travels through all fourteen regions of the country between September and October 31, in some thirty stages. If you are already in Senegal, it is a chance to see the Games pass through somewhere other than the three host zones.
The Fan Zones are free but require online reservation. Their exact locations had not been published at the time of writing.
Entering Senegal for the Games
Nothing special: the standard rules apply to spectators. No visa is required for a stay of less than three months if you are a national of France, the EU, Switzerland, the UK, Canada, the US or an ECOWAS country, with a passport valid for six months after your planned return.
A Games-specific electronic visa scheme has been mentioned, but it would apply to accredited persons — delegations and officials — not the public. We found only one source on this and no government confirmation: do not build your trip around it.
Since March 9, 2026, a vaccination record is no longer required on entry. The details are on our page on planning your vacation in Senegal.
Booking with us during the Games
How we work does not change during this period: you pay 20% of the cost of the stay online, which is our booking fee; the balance is paid directly to the owner or establishment on arrival. The tourism promotion tax of 1,000 FCFA per person per night is added on site.
One point to watch that is specific to a fixed-date event: read our cancellation policy before booking. Deadlines depend on the season of arrival, and October 31 falls just hours before a change of season — November 1 switches to high season, with a longer cancellation deadline.
Finally, if you live in Senegal, the resident discount applies as it does the rest of the year. Our resident rate page explains the details.
A calendar point to know before setting your dates. The Biennale of Contemporary African Art opens on November 19, six days after the Games close, and runs until December 19. Two consequences: if you extend your stay, you land in a completely different event — and if you were counting on a price dip after November 13, there will not be one. Dakar stays under pressure until mid-December.
Frequently asked questions
When are the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal?
From October 31 to November 13, 2026, with the opening ceremony on October 31 at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio. Events are spread across three zones: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. It is the first Olympic event held in Africa.
Is there still accommodation available?
Not in the hotels contracted by the organizers: the 74 establishments and 5,200 rooms reserved by the organizing committee are for delegations and officials, not the public. For visitors and athletes' families, accommodation is left to the market — no official platform, no price controls and no requisitions have been announced. That is exactly why you need to book early.
How much do tickets cost?
From 1,000 to 3,000 FCFA for a sporting event depending on category, 1,500 FCFA for a day pass in Saly, 5,000 FCFA for the closing concert. Road cycling and triathlon are free, as are the Fan Zones, but with reservation. The opening ceremony is much more expensive, from 2,000 to 40,000 FCFA depending on category — be wary of the widely repeated "1,000 to 5,000 FCFA" range, which only applies to sporting events.
Is the Dakar Arena in Dakar?
No, and that is the classic trap. The Dakar Arena and the Dakar Expo Center are in Diamniadio, about thirty kilometers from Dakar. Check the zone on your ticket before choosing your accommodation: the TER links the two in about forty-five minutes, but it is not the same city.
What is happening in Saly?
Six beach disciplines — beach volleyball, beach handball, beach wrestling, coastal rowing, triathlon and sailing — at the Saly Plage Ouest venue, in continuous use from October 31 to November 13. More than 15,000 spectators are expected, with a peak from November 9 to 13 and the closing concert on the beach on the 13th.
Do I need a special visa to come and watch the Games?
No. The standard entry rules apply to spectators: no visa for a stay of less than three months for many nationalities, with a passport valid for six months after your return. A dedicated e-visa has been mentioned, but it would apply to accredited persons, not the public — and we found no official confirmation.
How do I get around between the venues?
The TER links Dakar to Diamniadio in about 45 minutes for 1,500 FCFA in second class. Saly can only be reached by road, an hour and a half from Dakar. Within Dakar, there is the BRT, taxis and ride-hailing apps. Note: no free transportation for spectators and no shuttle plan between zones had been announced at the time of writing.
