From November 19 to December 19, 2026, Dakar hosts the 16th Biennale of Contemporary African Art, Dak'Art. A month of exhibitions, in three major venues in the Plateau for the official selection, and all over the city for the rest.
You will find the program on the Biennale's website. This page deals with something else, because it is the question we can answer better than anyone: where will you sleep, and when do you need to book?
The connection nobody makes
The Biennale opens on November 19. The Youth Olympic Games end on November 13. Six days apart.
Put end to end, that makes one continuous stretch: from October 31 to December 19, Dakar is under pressure for seven weeks. Two very different events, two audiences that hardly overlap, but a single stock of accommodation to absorb them.
The timing is no accident: the Ministry of Culture, Crafts and Tourism announced the Biennale dates on January 26, 2026, explicitly placing it in Dakar's calendar for the year, alongside the Games. The intention is deliberate — to make Dakar, over one quarter, a capital of culture and sport.
The practical consequence, however, is not something anyone planned for: if you are coming for the Biennale and wait until the Games are over to book, you will be looking for a place to stay in a city just coming out of two weeks at full capacity. Calendars don't clear in six days.
How big the Biennale really is
Dak'Art is not a niche fair. It is the oldest and most important contemporary art event on the continent, founded in 1990, and it draws crowds.
According to a former secretary general of the Biennale, the November 2024 edition attracted 500,000 visitors, including 50,000 from abroad, and featured more than 3,000 cultural events. We quote this figure with its source because it comes from an opinion piece rather than an official report — but the order of magnitude matches what the city goes through during a Biennale month.
Fifty thousand foreign visitors spread over thirty days doesn't fill Dakar all at once. But it adds steady demand for a month, on an accommodation stock with no slack, and right after the Games.
Where to stay depending on what you are coming to see
The Biennale happens in two parts, and they don't call for the same neighborhood.
The IN: the Plateau and Cap Manuel
The official selection occupies three venues, all in the south of the peninsula:
- The Ancien Palais de Justice (former courthouse), at Cap Manuel — the Biennale's signature venue for several editions, and home to the International Exhibition;
- the Museum of Black Civilizations, near the train station, in the Plateau;
- the Galerie Nationale (National Gallery), also in the Plateau.
All three are within a few kilometers of each other. If your stay is short and focused on the International Exhibition, stay in the Plateau or on the Corniche Ouest: you will visit all three on foot or with a ten-minute taxi ride, and avoid rush-hour traffic on the VDN.
See our furnished apartments in the Plateau, our hotels in Dakar and our guesthouses in Dakar.
The OFF: the whole city, and beyond
The OFF is the lively half of the Biennale: exhibitions organized by galleries, collectives, studios, restaurants and private homes. This is where the discoveries happen, and it is what turns a month of exhibitions into a month of city life.
It doesn't stay in one place: in 2024, the OFF spread across Dakar, Saint-Louis, Louga and Thiès, and as far as New York and Madagascar. Within Dakar itself, it is spread between the Plateau, the Medina, the Almadies, Ngor, Ouakam and Yoff.
If your stay is longer than a few days and you want to follow the OFF, the choice changes: serviced residences in the Almadies, serviced residences in Ngor and guesthouses in Ngor put you near the galleries in the north of the city, with the beach next door for quieter days.
The registration calendar shows the scale: applications for the OFF were open from July 27 to September 13, 2026. The full program is published after registration closes — so later than your own plans. That is one more reason to book before you know the details: by the time the program comes out, the well-located places are already taken.
If you are staying several weeks
A month of Biennale also draws people who stay on: curators, gallery owners, collectors, journalists, OFF artists. For a long stay, a furnished apartment costs less than a hotel room and gives you a kitchen. Our long-stay discounts apply automatically from a certain number of nights, with nothing to do on your part.
The 2026 edition: what is known and what isn't
What is official: the dates (November 19 – December 19, 2026), the artistic director — Morad Montazami, art historian and publisher, director of Zamân Books & Curating, appointed on April 16, 2026 — and the theme: "(Anti)fragility: arts of repair and strategies of the aftershock". He succeeds Senegalese curator Salimata Diop, who led the 2024 edition.
What is not yet official, as of September 12, 2026: the detailed program, the list of artists in the International Exhibition, opening hours, and ticketing. We found no published admission price for 2026. We would rather say so than repeat a price seen elsewhere: on this point, the only source that will count is the Biennale's website.
And one thing worth knowing, because it explains this year's nervousness: in October 2025, whether this 16th edition would take place at all was publicly in doubt — statutes dating from 1990, a funding model under debate. The official announcement on January 26, 2026 settled it. The edition is going ahead.
Note also that Dak'Art was historically held in May–June. The last two editions moved to November–December. If you had in mind that "the Biennale is in the spring," that is no longer true.
When to come during the month
A month-long exhibition doesn't mean every week is the same.
Opening week packs in the openings, professional meetings and most of the opening OFF events. It is the busiest time, the most interesting if you are coming for the art world — and the hardest time to find a place to stay.
The middle of the month is calmer: the exhibitions are in place, you can visit them without crowds, and accommodation is easier to find. It is the right compromise for visitors who come to see rather than to network.
Late December is a special case: December 19 falls at the start of the end-of-year holidays, when tourist demand picks up again for other reasons. Don't count on a lull.
Getting around during the Biennale
The three IN venues are close to one another, but the OFF will take you across the city. The Plateau to the Almadies is thirty to fifty minutes by car depending on the time of day, and much longer at rush hour.
The BRT (bus rapid transit) runs along the Guédiawaye – Petersen corridor, useful for reaching the Plateau from the suburbs. Ride-hailing apps (Yango, Heetch, Yassir) work well in Dakar and spare you the haggling. Details of real prices and routes are on our getting around Senegal page.
A tip on method: group your visits by neighborhood rather than by whim. Three exhibitions in the Plateau in the morning, two in the Almadies in the afternoon — not back and forth between them.
Booking with us during the Biennale
The way we work doesn't change during the event, and that is exactly what matters when prices start moving.
You pay 20% online — that is our booking fee — and the balance directly to the owner or property on arrival. No paying in full weeks ahead for a stay that hasn't started. The details are explained on why rent with Senegal Rent.
If you live in Senegal, the resident discount applies just as it does the rest of the year, Biennale or not: our resident rate page explains how to get it.
And check the cancellation deadlines before booking, because they depend on the season of arrival and November 1 marks the switch to high season: our cancellation policy.
Bring some cash as well: some OFF venues, artists' studios and small galleries don't take cards. Our money and payment page explains what is paid in cash in Senegal.
Our recommendation, in one sentence
If your stay falls between October 31 and December 19, 2026, book now, not when the program comes out: two events follow each other six days apart on the same accommodation stock, and the Biennale's detailed program will be published after OFF registration closes — in other words, too late for you.
Frequently asked questions
When is the 2026 Dakar Biennale?
From November 19 to December 19, 2026. It is the 16th edition of Dak'Art, the Biennale of Contemporary African Art, officially announced by the Ministry of Culture, Crafts and Tourism on January 26, 2026.
Where does the Biennale take place?
The official selection occupies three venues in Dakar: the Ancien Palais de Justice at Cap Manuel, the Museum of Black Civilizations and the Galerie Nationale, all three in the south of the peninsula. The OFF spreads across the whole city and, in previous editions, as far as Saint-Louis, Louga and Thiès.
How much is admission?
No price had been published for the 2026 edition at the time of writing, nor a detailed program or opening hours. We would rather say so than repeat a price found elsewhere. Check the Biennale's official website before you go.
Do I need to book accommodation well in advance?
Yes, and earlier than you might think. The Youth Olympic Games end on November 13 and the Biennale opens on the 19th: six days separate two events that weigh on the same accommodation stock. The busy stretch runs from October 31 to December 19.
Which neighborhood should I stay in?
The Plateau or the Corniche Ouest if you are coming mainly for the International Exhibition: the three official venues are grouped there. The Almadies, Ngor or Ouakam if you are following the OFF over several days and want the beach within reach. Either way, avoid crossing the city several times a day.
Wasn't Dak'Art held in the spring?
It was. Editions were historically held in May–June, but the last two took place in November–December. The 2024 edition ran from November 7 to December 7.
What is the OFF?
The parallel program, run by galleries, collectives, studios and private venues, that accompanies the official selection. It is the liveliest part of the Biennale and the most spread out across the city. Registration for 2026 was open from July 27 to September 13, 2026; the full program comes out afterward.
Does the resident discount apply during the Biennale?
Yes. It applies automatically on our listings, during the Biennale just as the rest of the year. Details are on our resident rate page.
