Standard room for two - La Cabane Rasta
Sine Saloum · Mar Lodj
La Cabane Rasta is single-story and has only five rooms. Two Standard rooms sleep two in a double bed, two others take up to three people, and a family room sleeps up to six: sixteen guests in all. Every room has a private bathroom and every room looks out over the river and the mangroves.
Comfort is deliberately basic, and it is better to know that before you cross: no air conditioning, no television, no private terrace in the rooms. What the house offers instead is outdoors: a garden, a shared terrace with tables and chairs facing the mangroves, and swimming in the bolong (mangrove creek), since there is no pool.
Breakfast is included in the price of every room. The bar-restaurant, built on stilts, serves local and international food, with vegetarian options, and room service is available. The house also offers housekeeping, a guide and pirogue trips in the delta.
Check-in is between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., check-out between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Children are welcome, and so are pets; parties are allowed and smokers accepted. A resident rate is available on request.
It suits couples and travelers looking for an island and a screen-free room rather than a hotel, families and small groups of friends who take the room for six, travelers from the Senegalese diaspora, long stays lived to the rhythm of the tides, and Dakar residents ready to drive three hours and take a boat across for a real long weekend.
The house is on Mar Lodj, an island in the Sine Saloum Delta, in the Fatick region. It can only be reached by pirogue, from Ndangane, on the opposite bank: you leave the car on the mainland and cross.
From Dakar, allow about three hours' drive to Ndangane, then the pirogue crossing. From Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD), about two hours to Ndangane. The house does not run a shuttle: a transfer from Dakar airport to the landing stage saves you finding your way on arrival.
Around it, from nearest to farthest: Ndangane and its landing stage, just opposite; Fimela, the main town of the municipality, on the mainland; Palmarin, between ocean and lagoons; and Joal-Fadiouth, the shell island, on the way to the Petite Côte.
Here, the pirogue replaces the car: everything starts from the jetty.
